Stuck in the Process

Chatting and laughing,
For a moment distracted from
The relentless wrongness,
A burner left on,
Door unlocked,
Something irreplaceable left too many miles behind to retrieve.

Conversation over,
Relieved panic as life excuses itself,
Tripping on awkward legs as it exits,
On to the next event.

A fractured impulse to follow dozes off,
Pinned by the weight of pulseless disinterest in everything interesting.
